gills (gills.in) helps you find a home to rent in Bengaluru. This page explains what we collect in the gills app and on app.gills.in, why, who sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. We follow India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
What we collect
- Your phone number, to sign you in with a one-time code, and your name if you add one.
- Your location, only when you ask for homes near you or pin a home on the map. It is used for that search and not stored.
- Homes you save and unlock, your wallet, coupons and refunds.
- Payments: the amount, what it was for and the payment reference. Card, UPI and bank details go straight to our payment providers (Razorpay, Paytm); we never see or store them.
- A home you ask us to list: its address, location, photos you take and how to reach you.
- Crash reports and usage: which screens are used and what goes wrong, through Google Firebase (Crashlytics and Analytics). These never include your phone number or name; our own records of what happens in the app use a pseudonymous id.
- Server logs: the page of our service requested and a shortened IP address, kept for 30 days to keep the service secure and working.
If you list homes (as a contributor), we also collect the home’s details, its photos and video, the owner’s name and phone (which you confirm they agreed to share), and, to pay your earnings, your UPI ID, the name on your bank account and your PAN. The gills team sees these to approve homes and send payments; your PAN is kept for tax records.
Why we use it
- To run the service: sign-in, showing homes, unlocking the ones you pay for, refunds, withdrawals and rental agreements.
- So the gills team can help you, from the first visit to the agreement and through your stay.
- To prevent fraud and abuse, and to fix problems.
- To meet legal duties, such as keeping payment records.
We do not sell your data and we do not show you third-party advertising.
Who sees it
- Owners never see your phone number. You choose whom to contact.
- The gills team sees what they need to help you and to run listings.
- Service providers that process data for us: Google Cloud and Firebase (hosting, database, sign-in, crash reports and analytics, in India and other regions), Razorpay and Paytm (payments), and Expo (app updates). They may use it only to provide their service to us.
- Authorities, when Indian law requires it.
When you unlock a home, we show you its exact address and the owner’s contact details, which the owner has agreed to share with people who unlock it.
How long we keep it
- Your account data, until you delete your account.
- Payment records, for as long as Indian tax and accounting law requires (currently up to 8 years), without your phone number or name once your account is deleted.
- Server logs, 30 days.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account in the app: Profile → Delete account. Your profile, saved homes and phone number are removed straight away. Withdraw any wallet money first; it can’t be paid out after deletion.
- See or correct your data, withdraw consent, or raise a grievance: write to [email protected]. We reply within 30 days. If you’re not satisfied, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
- Location, camera and photos are used only if you allow them, and you can turn them off in your phone’s settings.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Only the gills service reads the database, and staff access is limited and recorded.
Children
gills is for adults looking for a home. We don’t knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
